Serenity Approaches!

picture of the movie poster for the serenity movie.

The Serenity movie is only two days away! I can’t wait to see it and I plan on burning through some of my favorite episodes on Thursday when I have a day off! :D

K2 Beta 1 R96

Its time for another revision of K2. This revision features some more CSS fixes (looks like the sidebar shows properly in IE finally), miscillaneous bug fixes, the introduction of a bug tracking system (I guess the Flickr forum was getting to difficult to deal with for bugs), and an update notification system in the preferences whuch is nice if you don’t surg the site all the time like I do. ;) Another really awesome feature that I personally have been begging dor waas the inclusions of Michael’s Vader theme that he made for the premire of Episode III of Star Wars which features the original art of Rasmus, a friend of his from work. So thank you to you both for caving in to all of us who begged for this css/image set to be released. :)

Ugh!

The paper/presentation that was supposedly due yesterday wasn’t because my professor forgot their own schedule! God I hate it when that happens! :( I had not had much sleep for something like 3 days so I guess that was a good thing. I have till next Tuesday now so at least I can make my presentation better. I slept through most of yesterday so I am feeling weird. :P Just keeping everyone posted!

Just making sure nothing is amiss

I made a post earlier and it totally foobared my entire layout. Just making sure something isn’t borked in my database. I’ve never had one specific entry messs up like that, oh well deleting the post corrected it.

AARRGGHH!

Just an FYI, condensing a paper to only 5-7 pages on DDOS is not exactly easy. Its a freaking broad subject FFS. :P

K2 Beta One r90

Well its that time again, time to load up the latest revision of K2 Beta Once. The only addition of interest is AJAX commenting so let me know how that goes or if anything in general breaks. :)

Some more shinyness!

I’m sitting here in an empty room over at MSU because for the second time today I apparently do not have a class but I missed the memo. Soooooo, since I have nothing to do for over an hour I’m listening to The Signal Podcast on Big Poppa, my kickass iPod and I thought I would test out the new Camino version and make a post here. In other news, I have some brand new shiny purchases from Amazon.

First up was my latest DVD purchase, and in my personal opinion an absolute necessity for my movie collection, we have the wide screen edition of The Hitchhikers Guide To The galaxy! :D This movie totally rocks and I recommend that you all go out and get it. :) Remember one thing when you are traveling across the galaxy “always know where your towel is”. ;)

The Hitchhiker\'s Guide to the Galaxy

Next up we have my newest book purchase, and yes it IS extremely geeky. :P I have always been a big fan of PHP and MySQL and I have been looking for a really good book to further my education of this two awesome technologies and I think this is the one. The reviews that I read indicated that it was good for all skill levels and included many examples, the only way that I learn is by example so this is excellent! I have not had a whole lot of time to read it yet but I will do so when i get some more free time (oh how rare that is) and I will let you know how that goes if I remember. ;)

If you want to borrow it you are welcome to as long as you are willing to drop by the apartment and borrow it. ;) At any rate, its too damn quiet in this room and I am getting creeped out so I am going to wrap this up. Take care everyone. :)

Beginning PHP 5 and MySQL: From Novice to Professional

Do I detect a hint of Minty Freshness?

I’m playing around with two new pieces of software that I thought I would mention. First up is PunBB which was created by Rickard Andersson. It is described as:

A fast and lightweight PHP-powered discussion board. It is released under the GNU General Public License. Its primary goals are to be faster, smaller and less graphically intensive as compared to other discussion boards.

PunBB has fewer features than many other discussion boards, but is generally faster and outputs smaller, semantically correct XHTML-compliant pages.

So far I am really impressed with this BBS and I am testing it here. If you want to give me a hand go create an account and go crazy.

Next up we have some minty freshness! The next piece software is called Mint which was created by Shaun Inman. This is the same guy who created the awesome Shortstats program and now its replacement Mint. According to the site Mint is described as:

The web is listening to what you have to say. Admiring your design. Talking about your product. Mint helps you identify where the most interest is being generated and over what.

Mint provides a fresh look at your site. It is concise, flexible and timely. And to sweeten the deal, this delicious little bundle of PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript joy is referrer-spam-proof.

In my opinion this is a worthy successor to Shortstats and although this software is not free (its $30 per domain) its a pretty awesome bit of CSS and PHP coding!. What I really love about it beyond its incredibly simple and elegant interface are the plugins that you can create for it. There plugins are called Peppers (Pepper-Mint, cute no?) and they do everything from graphing hits on your site to detecting what language, browser, etc that visitors to your site are using.

Mint only registers hits to pages that use an embedded javascript and thus only detects visitors that have javascript enabled to eliminate spambots, searchbots, and the like, I think this is a pretty decent way to eliminate false positives and its a good trade off to not register hits from browsers such as Lynx. I have been using it for over a week now and it works great and I am hoping to get a demo up for it so you can see it but until then check out another demo that is located here.

Well, thats all for now, I’m going to go pass out for a few hours and then get up and finish up a paper. Till next time, I’m out! ;)

AVAST! It be that time me mateies!

AVAST! It be International Talk Like A Pirate Day! AAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Monday is International Talk Like A Pirate Day so break out your peg leg and eye patch and get to looting! AARRRRRR!!!

On another note, if all things go well all of my posts and comments should be “Piratized” on the 19th. so lets see if that breaks. ;) If you do observe thsi wacky holiday please let me know what you did and what booty you plundered. ;)

Update: It looks like the text filter worked fairly well! :)
