New versions of Wordpress and K2

I’ve finally settled in some and I am getting around to finally updating to the latest versions of Wordpress and K2. So far the job is going great and I am starting to get a little bit of a handle on what I will do doing and how everything works, more on that later.

Wordpress 2.1

Matt had anounced that this version will be entitled Ella after jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. Major updates include:

* Autosave makes sure you never lose a post again.
* Our new tabbed editor allows you to switch between WYSIWYG and code editing instantly while writing a post.
* The lossless XML import and export makes it easy for you to move your content between WordPress blogs.
* Our completely redone visual editor also now includes spell checking.
* New search engine privacy option allows you take you to indicate your blog shouldn’t ping or be indexed by search engines like Google.
* You can set any “page to be the front page of your site, and put the latest posts somewhere else, making it much easier to use WordPress as a content management system.
* Much more efficient database code, faster than previous versions. Domas Mituzas from MySQL went over all our queries with a fine-toothed comb.
* Links in your blogroll now support sub-categories and you can add categories on the fly.
* Redesigned login screen from the Shuttle project.
* More AJAX to make custom fields, moderation, deletions, and more all faster. My favorite is the comments page, which new lets you approve or unapprove things instantly.
* Pages can now be drafts, or private.
* Our admin has been refreshed to load faster and be more visually consistent.
* The dashboard now instantly and brings RSS feeds asynchronously in the background.
* Comment feeds now include all the comments, not just the last 10.
* Better internationalization and support for right-to-left languages.
* The upload manager lets you easily manage all your uploads pictures, video, and audio.
* A new version of the Akismet plugin is bundled.

Personally, I think this is the fastest version to date and the update process was as painless as ever. Additionally, the Wordpress team has included some new toys fro developers including cleaner codebase that previous versions. Some of the improvments include:

* Psuedo-cron functionality let’s you schedule events much like cron.
* Users admin can now comfortably handle hundreds of thousands of users.
* The new WP_Error class cleans up how we do error reporting and handling.
* The javascript loader makes it easier for plugins to include rich functionality.
* Tons of new hooks and APIs.
* We’ve started to fill out our code inline documentation.
* Image and thumbnail API allows for richer media plugins.
* Custom header, color picker, and image cropping framework.
* Over 550 bug fixes.

K2 v0.95 Release Candidate

Michael has announced the release of version 0.95 of K2. This version is compatible with Wordpress 2.1 and will ve the last version to support anything before version 2.1 so update Wordpress and K2 as soon as you can if you use them! After updating I found my whole blog to be faster loading and as usual no problems with updating.

When I get some more time I will speak about what’s happening here in my new home of St. Lois. take care everyone. :)

First Ever Artificial heart donated to Smithsonian

The pioneering artificial heart developed by Dr. Robert Jarvik will go on display at the Smithsonian. Jarvik donated one of his newer artificial hearts to the National Museum of American History and is lending the museum the heart that kept a dentist alive for 112 days.

Pretty neat bit of history if you ask me. For a first start 112 days is not to shabby. :)

Today, the NYSE has moved the issue a great step forward with a proposal to the SEC which if approved, would allow you to see real-time, last-sale prices across all Google properties including Google Finance, Personalized Google, Mobile, and of course, Google.com.

I just set my brother up with his own Wordpress blog which can be
found at http://gowrone.gatewayy.net. the domain is temporary until
he decides on his own domain name. He can post via email which is
cool. I thought i would make sure that I can still post via email as
well on the new host.

Roadtrip!

I’ll be spending most of today in st. Louis because I am hoping to take of tour of the building of my new employer, Savvis Communications. I will be employed there as a Network Technical Support Representative and I hope to tell you a little bit more about this when I have some time. It is a full time position with a full benefits package thankfully. So some time next week I will be moving from my home town of Springfield to the “big city” St. Louis, MO! I don’t want to move but you have to go where the work is, heres to bigger things and really large changes in my life. :) Stay tuned for more!

Wordpress 2.0.6 is out!

Just a quick FYI for anyone out there who hasn’t read this story yet. The Wordpress developers had released version 2.0.6 of their successful software today. Matt says that this version is “a pretty important release” and he want everyone to upgrade as quickly as possible. The main updates in this version are:

* The aforementioned security fixes.
* HTML quicktags now work in Safari browsers.
* Comments are filtered to prevent them from messing up your blog layout.
* Compatibility with PHP/FastCGI setups.

This release also invludes a new anti-XSS (Cross Site Scripting) function called attribute_escape() and a brand new filter called “query which will allow filtering of any SQL queries at runtime. These last two additions are mainly for developers but I am glad to see that they are working on security as quickly as vunerabilities are discovered. I have already update my copy and everything seems to be functioning. Please let me know if anything is broken. In the next couple of days I will also be making a much longer post about an exciting development in my personal life, so stay tuned. :)

Sleep in a cool environment. The ideal sleeping temperature is between 65 and 72 degrees. A mild drop in body temperature often induces sleep, which is why lying in a cool bed after a hot bath is so relaxing.

This is some really good advice to follow IMO. :)
